The history of logging railroads and “timber barons” clearcutting the White Mountains gave rise to the formation in 1901 of a Society for the Protection of NH Forests to “perpetuate the forests of NH through their wise use and complete preservation in places of special scenic beauty (1904 Forest Society mission statement) and the creation of the White Mountain National Forest.  Today, the Forest Society now owns and manages 190 properties totaling 60, 000 acres statewide.  Learn about NH History, land conservation, education, advocacy, forestry and recreation stewardship by the State’s oldest and largest non-profit land trust and forestry organization.”
